Over the years, working with such amazing (and legendary) talents as Jessye Norman, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Judith Jamison, Aretha Franklin, Halle Berry, TLC, Mary J. Blige, L'il Kim, Missy Elliot, Chaka Khan, Grace Jones, Naomi Campbell, Oprah Winfrey, and Diana Ross, I have learned a great deal and had a great time. It also helped me to realize that women with deeper skin tones have largely been ignored by cosmetic companies. (For the longest time, I was forced to go to theatrical supply houses to find makeup in shades that I would later mix together in order to achieve the colors I needed for work.) Finally, as corporations become aware of the immense buying power of these women (why is it always about money?), we are seeing an increase in overall product selection.
The biggest complain! among women with deeper skin tones is ihat it often ends up looking ashy. You know, that gray cast that comes from using a foundation that is often too pale or pink. I prefer foundations in warm golden tones, because they tend to "melt" seamlessly into the skin. By the way, if you ever have your makeup done in a cosmetics department or makeup store, take a mirror and go out into the daylight to see the truth. Often the lights in makeup boutiques are not neutral. Once you get home you may look completely different.
