Knowledge of basic face structure leads to an understanding of the concept of makeup balance. Though the variety of products we can use is infinite, the places to put them are not. We all begin with the same elements—two eyes, a nose, mouth, cheekbones, jaw, etc. Now work with me: Divide your face into two halves—a top and a bottom—then remember the importance of light and dark. We basically have four placement options to consider: a dark eye area balanced with a dark mouth; a light eye area balanced with a dark mouth; a dark eye area balanced with a light mouth; or a light eye area balanced with a light mouth. Keep in mind, the terms light and dark are relative—you ran modify intensity and work somewhere in the middle. What these four fundamental balance combinations do is simply shift our attention up or down, or broaden it to take in the face as a whole. (Note: halving your face into right and left sides is a different type of balance, and usually requires simple things such as extending brow length or overdrawing one side of the mouth to match the other.)
Louisa Lee
I had the great fortune to meet Ms. Louisa Lee while shopping for a Christ mas presenl last year. I was struck first by her kind smile, next by her resemblance to Isabella Rossellini. Within five minutes. I found myself asking her if she would like to be in my new book. Of course, I always feel a bit awkward asking total strangers this question: it can be misconstrued as a pickup line. Yuck! So I find myself over-explaining the where, when, why, and how. Louisa was simply charming, and was genuinely surprised when I actually called to give her some dates. Louisa had never modeled before and now she was being asked to work like a professional. Some would be intimidated or shy, but Louisa's spirit only nourished. At the end of the shoot, as with many of the people I have been fortunate lo work with, she found herself in tears. (Joining from a mixed-race background—half Mexican, hall" Chinese— Louisa grow up feeling like she never belonged to any one group. Now this uniqueness made her feel special. I believe it was the realization thai she had allowed herself to believe fitting in was more important than celebrating her one-of-a-kind status thai had her so emotional. They were tears of relief and self-acceptance.
